PETRONIO:" Yes, yes, my god. "
NERON" Vinicio knows how to choose. "
Pope: "It's lovely. You are generous sir, you may have given something that you ought to you. "
NERON:" Yes. What do you think, Petronius? "
PETRONIO:" Put a dress to the trunk of an olive tree and my poor and inexperienced nephew believe it's a beauty. I know your unique insight, my lord, and I'm sure even from here and you realize that it is too narrow hips. "
NERON:" Yes, yes, that's exactly what I believe. Poppaea a woman should never play another, we lack knowledge of the facts. Is not it true that it is ingenious what I said? "
PETRONIO:" Among the gods your humor is unique. "
NERON: "Dear Petronio ... or yes, that narrower hips."

NERON: "You're right, my fire will not burn enough yet. You know why? I've never seen a city burn. You say that it must undergo an experience to create something. The sculptor has its model, and I have none. "

NERON:" It ends the spring. Come the summer heat. That stench bounce then Rome. "CURIOSITIES

Originally, John Huston was going to be in charge of directing the film, but abandoned the project due to disagreements concerning the script. It was then that the direction was given to Mervyn LeRoy. The film project started in year 1 949. The original idea was to hire Elizabeth Taylor in the role of Ligia, and Gregory Peck in the role of Marco Vinicio. But in 1950, production changed hands, and the leading roles were taken over by Deborah Kerr and Robert Taylor. Anyway, Elizabeth Taylor made a brief appearance as a Christian prisoner in the arena, but received no credit for this. Sophia Loren also appears uncredited in the role of a slave in the palace of Nero.
Clark Gable turned down the role of the uniform Vinicio whereas it would take a look ridiculous. Kathleen Byron was considered for the role of Ligia. Among other actresses who auditioned for tests with the intention of getting a role, Audrey Hepburn was famous before. It is also the film debut of Bud Spencer, who plays one of the guards of the Emperor Ner ng.
Peter Ustinov had taken on the role of Nero, one year before the shooting of the film began. During that waiting time received a notice stating that although they were still interested in participating, they were worried he was too young to play Nero. Nero responded by noting that Ustinov had died at thirty and age, so if you wait too long, then it would be too old to play it. Soon received a response indicating that historical data were real, and that the paper would be yours. Mervyn LeRoy advised Peter Ustinov as Nero playing explaining that he imagined as a madman who would not stop playing with himself at night. Ustinov used this depravity as the basis for interpretation.
The model of the new city of Rome that Nero taught his advisers during the film, was originally built by the government or Mussolini as part of an exhibition of Roman architecture, 1937. The producers took it borrowed from the Italian government after the war.
The film was shot in Rome, Cinecittà Studios. Among his achievements were made with a record of use of costumes and disguises that included thirty in total. Teeth are also ten actors with a say in the film, and made use of more than thirty thousand extras. One of the problems that were found in the shoot was that the Lions returned to their cages after being released, because the arena were too hot. Director Mervyn LeRoy overcame this problem by having several uniforms were filled by fresh meat.
The film received eight Oscar nominations for the Academy. Two of them were for Best Supporting Actor Leo Genn fall on (On the role of Petronius) and Peter Ustinov (For the role of Nero). The other nominations were awarded to Best Art Direction, Best Color Cinematography, Best Design color Costume, Best Editing, Best Score and Best Picture. However, the film was the big loser of the delivery of that year, failing to clinch a single Oscar. The big winner this year was "An American in Paris."

PERSONAL NOTE This is probably one of the Christian-themed blockbusters, and the Roman Empire produced. Undoubtedly, there are numerous historical inconsistencies include the actual way in which the Emperor Nero and Empress Poppea, for instance, died. Anyway, remember that the film is not based on historical facts but merely on the novel of the same title written by Henryk Sienkiewicz.
Despite this, it is clear how well the film shows the corruption of the Roman Empire, and its weakness lie with insane Emperors times incapable of leading the people. In that sense, I think Peter Ustinov makes a magistrates work playing l Nero, making the audience starts laughing at his quirky eccentricity, so that this happens to cause real fear and revulsion at his dementia. It is without doubt one of the best performances of Ustinov, who had well deserved an Oscar. The film shows a consistent manner the rise and fall of Christianity during the reign of Nero, that did not stop these fans make religious martyrs. The circus scenes are breathtaking, and without graphics getting her shiver.
The film is a display of power that can be seen in scenes like Vinicio entry into Rome, the city fire, or those that take place in the circus. It's one of those blockbusters that we remembered for posterity, they are not needed computer-generated effects to create something great.
The first time I saw the movie was just a kid, and was one of those perpetual Easter emissions along with other films like " Ben-Hur," which always visit us on TV during that time. In the eyes of a child seemed like a wonderful film that contained it all: action, romance, intrigue, and some degree of terror. Undoubtedly it was a movie that did not enjoy his deserved reward, after failing to be done with one of its eight Oscar nominations. Despite this, the time has put in place as a classic of cinema, must for any viewer to consider cinephile.

HISTORY (This section contains details of the plot and story)
the film's action takes place between 64 AD and 68 AD. After the reign of Emperor Claudius, the Emperor Nero has again proven to be destructive and corrupt, and power threatens to destroy the Roman peace established, while Christianity begins to increase within the pagan empire, but always hidden in the underground . Marco Vinicio
Legacy is back after taking part in battles against the barbarians, but point entering the city is ordered to wait. Vinicio is directed to the presence of Nero that explains the wait is due to the need to give a grand entrance for the benefit of the people. Vinicio's uncle, Petronius, is the favorite counselor of Nero and sends Vinicio to rest at the residence of Aulus Placio. However, Nero starts to believe that his verses are not worthy because he has never seen a city burn. Lygia escapes with the help of a Christian palace called Acte, which the m ism time in love with Nero and is expelled by this, promising to return when the Emperor needed. Vinicius, Lygia is a Christian view and the location of a meeting led by the apostle Peter. Trying to take it by force, Vinicio is wounded, but served by Lygia and Ursus protector. Vinicius is about to surrender to the love professed by Ligia, and met Paul who visits the home at the time. However, Vinicio is unable to adapt to a Christian life, which includes submission peace and liberation of their slaves. Therefore decided to release its control Ligia, after smashing the wooden cross that hangs on one wall, succumbing to anger again.

Peter is taken to prison while the first group of Christians is thrown to the lions. In prison, Pedro Vinicio home Ligia and has understood the real value of Christianity peaceful. Another group of Christian s is crucified, among which Aulus is pleased, that again accusing Nero of the fire. The attitude of Christians, singing to his death with joy, begins to doubt the people who come to the massacres of the circus. For his part Peter was crucified upside down, saying die like Jesus Christ is more than he deserves. Poppaea
plans his revenge on the next slaughter circus. Ligia is tied to a pole in the sand where a bull is released, while Vinicius is forced to watch from the pleasure of Nero. Ursus is given the opportunity to save face the animal, and succeeds. Despite that Nero ordered the death of Ursus and Ligia, a fact that puts the people and their advisers against him. Vinicio jumps to the sand and Nero blamed the fire by getting people to believe him. It also announces the imminent arrival of Galba to take command of the Empire. The people are outraged by the truth, and the unnecessary slaughter of Christians, turned against Nero that escapes to the palace. Besieged
there, Nero strangles Poppaea culp andola of all the disasters that have happened. At that time Actea reappears to help as promised, the now lone Emperor. Asking him to commit suicide to end with some honor. Incapable due to his cowardice, Nero asks for help, and pushed the dagger Acte to the chest of Nero who finally dies.
At dawn, the General Galba enters Rome to take command of the Empire, but many Romans suspect that this was not simply the beginning of the end of the Empire. Vinicius, Lygia and Ursus leave Rome in the company of Nazario. Passing the Appian Way are the staff of Peter miraculously covered with flowers. The group realizes that the place is now sacred. After leaving the place, this is covered by a miraculous light that proclaims "I am the way, the truth and the life." SCENE

No doubt most epic scene of this great production. Rome burns while Nero mad notes for his composition.
