CURIOSITIES
The film is based on the life of Jack Lewis, author of the saga "The Chronicles of Narnia" and his relationship with Joy Gresham. The screenplay by William Nicholson is based on his own television production of 1985 and its subsequent adaptation to a play premiered in 1990. The original television production was titled "The name is Joy" and was originally written by Brian Sibley ending writing the book "Shadowlands: The True Story of CS Lewis and Joy Davidman. The play premiered at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on November 11, 1990, and had 169 performances to close on April 7, 1991. He received a Tony Award nomination as best play of 1991. There are certain differences between the play and movie. The play begins with a discussion of Le wis about the mystery of suffering, while the film makes this one of the sanctity of marriage. In the book the honeymoon of Joy and Jack takes place in Greece, while in the film visit the Golden Valley in England, instead of the writer's childhood. In television production, Joy had another son, Douglas also called David. Richard Attenborough has replaced as director Sydney Pollack. When he joined the project and have had in mind Hopkis Anthony and Debra Winger for the lead roles. Originally he had been asked to lead Barbara Streisand and interpret the character of Joy Gresham, but this declined the offer, preferring to deal with "A Normal Heart" project that never took place. Because it is unknown internationally, Nigel Hawthorne, who had played with Jack Lewis on the play, was replaced by Anthony Hopkins, who was on the rise. Michael Denison, who interpreted tobacco Harry Harrington replaced Peter Barkworth. This is also the latest film by Robert Flemyng, Michael Denison, Norman Bird, and Gerald Sim. Anthony Hopkis prefer to memorize your part of the script independently, while Debra Winger is in favor of the repeated trials on the scene. To accommodate to Winger, Richard Attenborough was given to rehearse with her, reading the share of Hopkins. In real life, Douglas Gresham became the heir to Jack Lewis, and is one of the producers who have done the film series "The Chronicles of Narnia." In one scene from the film, Douglas can be seen reading in bed. The book that this reading is "The Hobbit" by Tolkien, who was a good friend and colleague Jack Lewis in real life. Joy's husband was William Lindsay Gresham Gresham, an author whose most famous work was made into movies with the title of "Alley of the Lost Souls" (1947) with one Tyr Power. The Pub "Bird and Baby "in the movie was actually" The Eagle and Child ", in which Jack Lewis was a frequent customer. Debra Winger received a nomination for Best Actress Oscars, William Nicholson and another for Best Adapted Screenplay. First it lost to Holly Hunter for "The Piano", while Nicholson lost to Steven Zaillian for "Schindler's List." Although unnoticed at the box office and Academy Awards, the film was unanimously praised by critics.
PERSONAL NOTE I remember the first time I saw this movie. I was on my trip to Earth in Alsa, and worried that I put the usual hodgepodge of bus, I found this very pleasant surprise. There are different points this film surprised me. The first was the treatment of loneliness as a way of life. I think if you are a loner like me, there are many key points in this movie that will do it to feel identified. One might think that the characters of Jack and Joy have many links in common, but the strongest of them all is the loneliness. While Joy seems more willing to fight that feeling with an outgoing personality and determined, while Jack has become more secretive character, although this obviously fascinated by women. The only escape from Jack is reading, lectures, and stories filled with magic that served as his escape route. We arrived at another point that fascinated me, and this is the fear of disclosure. The film makes constant reference to the need to express our feelings before it's too late. In this way relates the fear of love, with the inevitable fears of loss. However, it opens the window to the possibility that if we close that way, if we succumb to this fear, we run the risk of ending up experiencing a life of emptiness, also equivalent to the loss that we fear. Thus we come to those signs that give us life at certain times, such as in this case is Joy cancer. Such signs two paths open to us. One is to close it again for fear of loss, and another is to decide to maximize the time we have next to someone who can help us to live again. This is the real backdrop of this elegant and romantic film that teaches us the importance of living day to day and not close to it. The work of the entire cast of actors is exceptional as well as touching emotions at all times making the viewer at the same time gives us a bright and beautiful vision of feelings, and how to handle certain situations in our lives. Question whether a doubt a jewel that has not been known to be as should have been.
