Rainforest World Music Festival 2010

One of the most important annual events are held at the Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival . The festival features the presence of musicians from around the world, especially indigenous music of Borneo and each July during three days of music also provides a good example of cultural, leisure and gastronomy.

And there we were, ready to learn first hand this event and be seduced by the culture of Borneo.

The Sarawak Cultural Village , a place that hosts the event, is in the tourist Santubong peninsula about 35 km north of Kuching.

During the rest of the year is an interesting museum which displays models of traditional houses of the ethnic groups of Sarawak, as the Iban, Orang uli, or malanau bidayuh. In each of the houses of the tribe members display their crafts and traditional dance are represented.

To get there by bus can be made that during the three day festival, significantly increases the frequency. In the tourist office or at the hotels can get schedules and stop locations are located in some of the most central hotels in the city.

We go to the Harbour View Hotel, where a bus stops. In the hall there is a counter where they sell the tickets but the next is now complete and we expect the following. The price of transportation is of 20RM return. It must reserve time for the trip but is not required to return to Kuching.

The bus is extremely comfortable, with spacious seats that provide a good nap for about 45 minutes to Santubong peninsula. From the bus stop to the entrance to the Cultural Village must walk about one kilometer.

Tickets are not cheap: 110RM per person per day but be aware that the visit to the Cultural Village outside of festival dates and costs 60RM. We were wondering whether to buy tickets in advance online as in previous years, easily exhausted, also purchased at the box office were more expensive. At the end we risk and I do not know if it's because the crisis effect, but we did not do just queue and the organization had decided that the ticket price would be the same as that purchased in advance.

visitors attended the event throughout the world but I could see a very high percentage is slanted eyes, from different parts of Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Keep in mind that during the days of the Festival all hotels in Kuching hang the sign of complete and prices soar.

The atmosphere is unique and abundant supply. The exhibition opens at 10 am and throughout the day different activities although the concert starts at 7 pm when the sun has hidden.

The setting is idyllic, amidst a forest landscape with Mount Santubong in the background.

visited the different traditional houses that are scattered around the lake. Besides knowing the style of construction and everyday objects of the tribes of Sarawak on each craft and there are exposed live music performances. You can also learn the art of making pottery, weaving or drawing characteristic tattoos were the most successful stand between youth.

Food stalls are crowded and in addition there are various Malaysian specialties for all tastes. The stands of Heineken, one of the sponsors of the festival, are the most popular and is that a beer (5 RM) helps to better withstand heat. It is curious that in an Islamic country, a beer company sponsor an event of this nature.

Shortly before 7, people are more concentrated near the stage where concerts are held. The staff is accommodated in the stands or on the floor with towels as the heavy rain yesterday left a real quagmire.

We expect 8 performances of 45 minutes each to take turns in both scenarios.

At 7 in a timely manner Ensemble begins Shanbehzadeh Iranian group that offers music and traditional dance from the Persian Gulf, especially in the province of Boushehr, a small region south of the country. This group sings everyday life with the help of many different traditional instruments - neyanbânn (Iranian bagpipe), nevdjofti (double flute), Damman (drum), zarbetempo (percussion), Senj (kind of cymbal) and boogh (horn goat).
Then Kimura Ono, a Japanese duo to continue with a French band Minuit Guibolles folk with influences from jazz, classical and traditional patterns.

follow a group of the Czech Republic, Reunion Island, United Kingdom do and Burkina Faso but the body does not hold and after the performance of the French group returned to Kuching.

Finally, after all, in our case the performances are the least interesting thing was the opportunity to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the Festival and learn more about the cultural diversity of Sarawak.
